I woke up this morning
and I sat right up in bed
Yawned and scratched
and tried to shake
the cobwebs from my head
Then I slowly crawled out
to the edge of the bed
And when I got the nerve up
to look over the edge
something said,
No way, not today
And those shoes way down there on the floor
they look so far away
No way, not today.
The thunder rolls the radio
goes blasting in my head
It’s 5:30 in the a.m.
and the traffic’s bad it says
And I hear the rain a pounding
on the roof over my head
I look down at my shoes again
and then I look back at the bed
‘n something says,
I need a raise
And those shoes way down there on the floor
are worn out anyway
No way, not today
I think I’ll call in sick
and make excuses for myself
Like I had a little car trouble
the driver over-slept
Or while trying to put my pants on
I fell down and hurt myself
I had a little eye trouble
I couldn’t see myself
going in
No way, not today
And those shoes way down there on the floor
is right where they will stay
